i mean, i'm intrigued, but i'm not thrilled at how sloppy things seem to be... not as tight, you know?
it's fun show now as opposed to a great one for me. i hope this changes back to its original way of thrilling and mystifying with plausibility being its core... can they come back?
let's see... anywho, it seems we ain't all that excited as a group much nowadays...
oh well...

im there. im sad about it, but the oomph is gone. too much seems sloppy. was anyone else really annoyed at the clumsy way we were suddenly introduced to jacks grandpa, who fulfilled a narrative function and then vanished? just lazy screenwriting... like the way daniel is such a flimsy character, or the way big shit gets set up to be all complicated and mysterious and then turns out to be super simple.... sun is out to kill... ben? duh! daniels mom is... the creepy old lady? duh!
[sighs]
why cant every show be Battlestar Galactica?
I dunno, I'm not as down on Lost as much as you guys are. You want to see sloppy? Are you still watching Heroes? Nonsensical tripe is being kind.
I dunno that I'm jumping up and down excited the way I was in previous seasons -- yet. If you'll recall, however, both seasons 3 and to some extent 4 started off weakly, but by the second half, we had some really good "oh shit" moments. Michael Emerson, the actor that plays Ben, promises some "oh no they didn't" moments later in this season, so I'm going to hold off judgment until we at least get half way through.
And so far I'm not hatin' on the time jumping thing because it could be a really cool way -- narratively speaking -- of learning about the history of the island. If ever time-jumping was done well, this might be the best I've seen. They might be all stuck back with the Dharmas! That's kinda cool and really opens up the things they can do, if you think about it (e.g., Daniel warns young Charlotte (to no avail), Daniel helps build the Orchid, and who knows what else? Do they run into young Ben? Do we find out more about Annie? Are we going to find out things about Dharma and the stations that will change how we feel about Dharma and the Others?
It's really quite an amazing thing that the show has done. It established itself well enough in the early going that ABC would never cancel it before it's supposed to end, and now it's like the writers are muckin' around a bit, having fun with what they've created. I can't say I love every decision they've made, but I appreciate that they're not playing it safe, that they're really switching up the show. I dunno. For my own part, I really want to see where this goes...
I with Walead on this one!
Samula, I know that you love yourself some BSG, but even they have their missteps. Don't make me bring up the dead cat. I don't feel at all cheated by LOST at all. What you are calling laziness in this show is tip top writing by other show standards. I'm not saying we should lower our expections by any means, but I think that we're already working with a rather high level of belief suspension - read as time travel and 4-toed statue - so I'm willing to allow them some wiggle room (no pun intended - Get it? Toes? Wiggle Room? Never Mind!)
Was the random injection of "Gran'dad" a little sloppy? (Maybe more random than sloppy) Of course it was, but honestly, didn't you all just assume that Jack would just roll up to his old house and grab something of his dad's anyway? Really, Jack could've just thrown a lab coat in the box and been done with it. Quite honestly, I, initially, didn't give white haired lady's directive a second thought. The only reason we're even giving it a second thought is because of the introduction of Gran'dad. "Put something of your dad's in the casket," wasn't the beginning of such a well designed narrative that it would even necessitate a a new character to tie it all together unless, possibly, the writers had other intentions for him. What I'm trying to say is that finding something of Christian Sheppard's wasn't a Holy Grail quest, so it is quite possible that they introduced this character for other reasons. They do that, you know. I never thought we'd see the crazy-white-haired-lady-with-no-whites-in-her-eyes-from-the-antique-shop again. Yet, here she is - somebody's gun-totin' mama! I don't know how probable it is that we'll see Gramps again, but in the Land of the LOST things are never what they seem. Have faith people. Have faith.
well i'm glad to see that my pessimist post actually go peeps (read saffie and tina - not yet sarah) to interact!
my observation was that the season was so slow compared to previous, that peeps weren't into discussion... anywho, i'm very happy with the momentum this week's ep picked up and hope it keeps it up! And, no, i'm not being fickle cuz they gave a shout-out to my homeland (no Saffie, u did not see me in the background ;P --surrounded by columbians, mexicans, and ccubans - yet not a single dominican!)
well now, let the blogging re-begin!
I really really liked that episode! For an episode that didn't progress the mythology of the show a whole lot, I actually was really moved by it. I thought Locke was great, I loved the scene between Locke and Jack (well lit too!), and the twist near the end was genuinely shocking and violent. I also liked the idea of the "new losties" on the Hydra Island and the "new Jack." Good episode...
P.S. Juancy, not to burst your bubble, but the DR scene was probably shot in Hawai'i, which may explain the lack of real Dominicans. =) I recognized a bunch of locations in this episode... I've been to that cemetary (Sun's father's house is actually like only 100 feet away, and it's in reality a Buddhist temple), I've been to Hurley's hospital (if I remember correctly, it's actually a school).
i liked this episode a lot! as much as i complain about "they're not moving the big story forward," sometimes you need to step back and really sink your teeth into the characters, because ultimately, that's what makes any narrative work. it was very moving to see Walt again, and while i would have liked a little more time to watch Locke try and fail and get disillusioned and turn to suicide (really, all he did was roll up on someone, say "we have to go back to the island" with no preamble, and then they say no, and then he goes on to someone else, and says "Hi Kate WE HAVE TO GO BACK TO THE ISLAND" and she says no and he moves on.... it felt super rushed, and in the end i don't know that i felt the utter frustration and sadness that would lead him to kill himself), i agree that it was very moving... he's a complex character, and im glad to see him get more play.
plus jack is at his hottest when he's at the edge of breaking down.
why do we think Ben killed Locke when Locke mentioned Mrs. Hawking? Because he realized Widmore knew about Mrs. H? In which case... what good would killing Locke do? (wait... DID Widmore know about Hawking? Or was that just something Christian said?)
On a hyper-nerdy note, when Locke was standing on the table with the noose around his neck, about to jump, I firmly believe that the music quoted the score from Alien3, specifically the scene where Ripley is standing over the blast furnace, about to jump. Walead, any blogs you know of be able to confirm this?
Question: If Locke has been reincarnated and is now alive, does it stand to figure that Christian Shepard is also actually alive?
I also think the reason that Locke didn't try so hard to get them to come back is because that's his role in the real world. He's a nobody, a failure. He only somebody on the island.
hey folks... here's an entry from my blog, which started out as a coy lil thing and then turned into a more detailed rant....

Hey peeps! Remember me!? That's right... a posting, yay! First I'd just like to say that just in case you didn't know- my world has been a "little" busy lately... what with training to RUN a MARATHON(26.2 miles, for the record) as well as LAUNCHING a brand new TV channel! Sooo... forgive my absence, but I hope it's understood why.
And actually, I probably won't say a ton about the show- but many of you might know why. At the beginning of this season when they really got into the time travel and the craziness- I decided that it was time to STOP asking questions and just take it for what it was. There were a couple of reasons for that. 1- this shit is confusing, and the more you try to figure it out, the more it makes your head hurt. 2- to me, there are too many things happening that are like "WTF, that would NEVER happen!". And no, I'm not talking about the time travel and the warping and craziness. I'm talking about how so many things are just accepted as fact(ie- ben on the phone with jack, "just get the body, I'll meet you there. Are you okay ben? Nope, someone kicked the shit out of me, so go ahead and pick up Locke's body and I'll just meet you there" OR the group trip to see our good friend Mrs. hawking. NO ONE asked any real questions, just kinda took what she said as the word of GOD -yes, they were in church- and just did what she said.) I'm sure there are others, none that I can think of right now. Bottom line to that- it just doesn't feel real to me, like that is not how real people would act. They'd ask way more questions, and even if they did go on to do whatever they were told- they'd at least put up more of a fight!
Don't get me wrong now, I still love me some LOST(although I will say I don't REALLY think we've seen enough of my man, and that makes me very sad!). I just think it's best to take it as it is- and be amazed and stupified and STOP trying to guess what it is that's supposed to be coming to light. I have been disappointed in a few episodes this season, and love a few others. I really liked this last one, and my jaw DEFINITELY dropped when ben killed Locke... WTF indeed! I also liked the scene with Widmore, and how he says he met John when he was 17, and Locke just saw him 4 days ago- so cool! I'm still curious as to who is the REAL bad guy here... is it Ben, or is it Widmore? I mean... I know both their asses are BAD- but who is worse? My money is on Ben... but that could be just because we've seen more of his evil shit than Widmore's.
And Tina, to answer your question: I absolutely believe that jack's dad is alive again. I also think that Walt is going to die, but then somehow get back to the island and come back to life(remember in season's past- locke kept seeing him after he was gone).
It's definitely getting better and I for one still believe!
There.... happy!?
