Haha. I was actually just about to post something! First off, I don't know about you guys, but I LOVED this episode! I've seen a couple comments from random people saying they thought it was awful. What're people looking for exactly? I thought in every way -- emotionally, narratively, cerebrally -- it was moving and powerful. What did you guys think?
Also -- you know me -- I got me some theories/thoughts! Okay, so Jacob is the "good" spirit that protects the island and the "bad" spirit (the man in black we saw at the beginning) is seeking to protect the island in a different way. In the bible, Jacob has a twin brother named Esau. So let's call this other unnamed guy Esau. They're both "spirits" of some kind. And maybe the island is a sort of eden -- a Jacob's ladder to god. Jacob wants to invite people to the island to help them build a utopian society. Esau hates people (because the previous people invited to the island have only ruined things -- i.e., the Egyptians) and he thinks the best way to protect the island is to keep people off of it.
So who's Esau? I think he's the monster. He's the black smoke. He's able to change into people (Yemi, Alex, etc.) to fulfill his goal of protecting the island by keeping outsiders off of it. I think he's also Christian on the island, pretending to be a representative of Jacob. Instead, he's got his own agenda. And he shape shifts into Locke to (finally) kill Jacob, his one obstacle, so he can fully take over the island. He shape shifted into Alex to tell Ben to follow Locke (the black smoke didn't appear until Locke was off screen -- AND, if you recall, when Ben first signals for the monster, he and Sun wait for it and they hear something coming out of the bushes -- and it's Locke!), and he got Richard to tell Locke to die so that he could be sure that he could shape shift into Locke's body when he returns to the island dead (it would appear that he can only shape shift into bodies of dead people). For some reason he can't kill Jacob directly, so he does it through Locke/Ben. As the smoke monster, he "infects" people to enlist them in protecting the island by killing "bad" people who would exploit the island. Widmore's been infected, Hawking, etc. They're not working for Jacob -- they probably don't know it, but they're actually working for Esau, the "bad guy."
One other thing. I think it's actually possible that Juliet DID change things. All the flashbacks in the episode were of the main characters meeting (and being physically touched by) Jacob -- EXCEPT Juliet. We see her flashback as a child with her parents breaking up. But Jacob does NOT appear in that flashback. Is this merely a coincidence? Or maybe this makes her an honest-to-god "variable" that Jacob didn't account for?
Unbelievable episode! I can't believe we have to wait 7 months to see what happened!
I agree that Jacob's nemesis is the smoke monster AND Christian Shepard. But I also think that Jacob accounted for Ben "killing" him because he took it way to easily. I think when he whispered "They're coming", it was a "F U, you ain't really get me". Maybe he was going around touching the castaways as some sort of back up plan.
Quite possibly, everyone died in the explosion but those "touched" get to go back to their bodies at the point of touch with full knowledge of what happened. Therefore they can change things... I dunno maybe it's far fetched?
And who is the "they in they're coming? Is it Alana and crew? Or is it the lets detonate a hydro bomb crew?
Also, do we think that inversion of the Lost screen (it's always black with white letters and last night was white with black letters) mean anything? Next season, things are inverted or opposite base on the hydro bomb?
Another thing! Jacob or um... not Jacob's shack! So if, Papa Shepard is actually Jacob's nemesis, then he was in that shack that had a circle of ash around it. Was he imprisoned in that shack somehow? And when Illana and crew happened upon it, the circle of ash was broken, so he was free...???
I'm not a fan of this idea that the incident caused certain "touched" people to jump into the future or whatever. My honest opinion is that they probably didn't change anything. If the bomb had not gone off, how would Dharma have sealed off the electromagnetism? I think the bomb had always gone off and what happened was that the explosion caused a cave in that stopped the electromagnetism long enough for Dharma to build a proper concrete wall around it. Think of it this way: Richard said they he saw all the Losties die. Well, did the incident pre-bomb look substantial enough to have killed all of them? Not really. They looked like they were all on their way to safety. So I think the bomb has always gone off, killing everyone around it, including the Losties in the area (but not Miles or Chang or Radzinsky, who had all gotten away in time).
I think Jacob was trapped in the cabin by the ash (although, I must note that the Jacob way back when does not look like the same Jacob of now), and somehow got out by someone moving the ash. From there, I think Christian/Smokey entered (he may have even been the one to move the ash -- is that what he enlisted Claire to do?) to wait for Locke to appear (so he could tell him to move the island and protect it from the Boaties). I don't think he was ever trapped there. Indeed, he appears to move around wherever he wants.
One other thing -- it looks like we were wrong about the Egyptian statue. It looks like it has an alligator head, not a cat head, meaning it might be Sobek (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sobek). That particular god is the god of fertility, which might connect to why women giving birth die on the island.
